WINE DINNER BLOG REPORT #1

A bunch of my friends and I are all taking the geography of wine class together. As such, we all went over to one of the friend's places (who had a big enough table) for a wine dinner. This dinner involved 6 different dishes and four different wines, however, this is only to accommodate dietary restrictions of the group. This is three of the courses and their respective wine pairings.

Our first course was an appetizer of pan fried wontons, paired with a sparkling Spumante Rosé. This Rosé on its own smells wonderfully of fruit, specifically peach, crisp apple, and pineapple. The wine is dry and tart, the carbonation lightens the pallet. It is sweet forward, and has a tart flavor. I would definitely recommend this wine. Paired with the wontons, the wine cuts the saltiness and adds something to the fatness/oily nature of the wontons, but in a good way. This pairing also added to the sweetness of the wine with hits of vinegar. This was a fantastic pairing and a good way to start the night.

The second wine was Dancing Flame Chilean Red Blend paired with roasted potatoes and asparagus. On its own Dancing Flame smells vinegary with hints of nutmeg, spice, and blackberry. Its low tannins, low acid, and moderately dry. Definitely the best red I have had so far. This wine does not pair well with asparagus, and tastes extremely sour. An all around terrible experience. However, it paired much better with the potatoes giving a mild nutty flavor.

The last pairing I will talk about is Paso Robles, Magistrate, Merlot with spaghetti. The merlot on its own smells strongly of balsamic vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and dark cherry. It is fairly tannic and dry with a moderate light body for a red. Pairing with the pasta this wine gains a light buttery flavor. This is a fairly good pairing.

Overall, this was a very good night with my favorite pairing and wine being the wontons and sparkling Rosé. All the food was very good and most of the pairings yielded interesting flavors. And most importantly great dinner conversation.
